are required to write a 5-7 page paper — typed in 12 point Times New Roman font,
double spaced, using APA, MLA, or Chicago format. While your personal reflections are
important, they should not make up the majority of your paper. You will be expected to
make connections with class readings, lectures, and conversations. As in all academic writing you are also expected to cite the sources that you use in the paper including social media posts, websites, and newspaper articles.
For this paper, watch both of these documentaries that highlight the experiences of first-year teachers:
TEACH – Documentary https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzBC1MusENY
“A Walk in My Shoes: The First Nine Months” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_785XzjW3D8&t=142s
After viewing the two documentaries (which will take about 1 hr 45 minutes), write a 5-7 page analysis of what you have viewed. In your analysis connect to key concepts from Pedagogy of Freedom, None of the Above, readings from Anyon & Green, Baldwin, Johnson or Ladson-Billings, or course lectures/discussion that you believe are relevant for understanding the documentaries.
Did you see the teachers in the documentaries doing anything you would have done differently? Did you see them do anything that you found impressive?
If teachers in these documentaries were tasked with preparing for digital learning, as teachers have had to do during the COVID-19 outbreak, what kinds of considerations, accommodations, and gatekeeper behaviors would they have to negotiate in order to successfully make this transition?
How could concepts found in one of the readings have aided teachers in the videos prepare for what they were confronted with as first year teachers?
Thinking about the ethical responsibilities of teachers as discussed by Paulo Freire, how might these educators have made meaningful transitions from classroom environments to digital learning environments, such as have been needed during the COVID-19 crisis?
